The Interview

Today I have fellow Pitch Wars mentor Monica B. Wagner on the blog talking about her new book. 

How is writing a sequel different from writing the first book?

I loved it. Because I already knew the characters more deeply after having written the first book, and that helped me go a little faster this time.

 

What’s it like telling four stories in one (with each character having their own view represented)?

Oy. It felt like I was writing four books at once, because each POV character has a very different personality and voice. And sometimes juggling the POVs was hard—mostly with the first drafts of the first book, when I was still figuring out things, like their personalities.

 

What’s the best research you’ve done so far for the series?

The book takes place in a US college. And that was interesting to research, because I went to college in Chile. So things were very different, and I learned a lot. That was super fun!

 

Who is your favourite character from the Frosh Series and why?

I love each of the four characters. But if I had to pick one, maybe I’d go with Devon, because she was the most challenging character to write. I knew she was selfish (like Garfield) and very flawed, but she also was honest and deep, deep down, she isn’t such a bad person. I had never written about an anti-heroine like that before. And I really loved the challenge.

 

Which character from the series do you identify with the most and why?

Ellie. Because she overthinks everything. And I’m like that sometimes. I’m too much in my own head.

 

For fans of your writing, what can people expect from you after Frosh 2?

The next book is the end of the series. So they can expect a HEA (happily ever after). =D
